Commemorating The Velvet Revolution
This year, Sweden celebrates 100 years of democracy. Czechia also commemorates 30th anniversary of the return of freedom and democracy – the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The road there was hardly not an easy one and exile literature and art played an important role. How was the situation seen through authors eyes? Doesn’t the future of democracy in Europe and worldwide seem to be far from certain?
Jana Witthed, who was granted asylum in Sweden after the Soviet Army crushed pro-democracy reforms in her native country in 1968 will read her poems about occupation and exile. She also works as a journalist in Sweden and she was one of the cofounders of an exile magazine published from the second half of the seventies to the beginning of the nineties. Jana got several awards and grants, among all some from Swedish Arts Council.
Czech ambassador Jiri Sitler will address the historic issue in his short introductory remark and director of Czech Center Stockholm Zuzana Kabelkova will introduce the program.
Participants are invited to a glass of wine after the event.
